Pick a domain name that contains the name of the company you're trying to undermine. What could go wrong?

> factories run on excel...terrifyingly so

Chemical plants too. But that does not mean there is no code.

An Excel document can be programmed with VBA to make connections to network resources, read/write files, send emails, etc.

I might not be the most effective tool for every task but it's everywhere and allows workers to automate work without making a request to hire a developer or buy new software. Someone can gradually automate business tasks on their own initiative rather than go through multiple layers of corporate bureaucracy.

absolutely agreed. I mean terrifying more in the sense of the lack of controls that I have typically seen in place and the way 'pull request equivalents' are handled and modifications are made.

I think his point is that, if the FBI gains this ability, foreign governments will ban iPhone use which will damage an American company.

That too, but also all foreign governments will have predecent for demanding the same capabilities. Apple might as well just strip out all security features if that occurs instead of wasting time catering to demands.

Thanks for clarifying everyone.

The larger point is, if "secure" devices are illegal in the US, who is going to make them and what are they going to cost? The FBI/CIA/NSA/DOJ/etc all use mobile phones, tablets, and computers. Will all of these government agencies be using special devices built only for them, perhaps by another government agency?

The FBI having the ability to break in to NSA or DOJ machines is definitely not ok and I'm not sure anyone is going to say otherwise besides the FBI. Hell, we can't even trust the FBI agents with a few bitcoins.

This article is about direct contributions from individuals. This is just a fraction of the donations to political campaigns. For example, you don't find any mention of labor unions which provide more money than individuals and donate almost exclusively to democrats. And we haven't mentioned corporations.

Imagine a giant hammer and sickle and a McDonalds arch so large that you can't see the pile of monopoly pieces or even the White House behind them.

2012's biggest individual contributors: https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/list.php?cycle=2012

The first two items in the list are both Sheldon Adelson

ActBlue is primarily individuals donating to democratic candidates they support.

#4 backed republicans almost exclusively. Interestingly, their founder funded Oliver North's legal defense in the Iran-Contra scandal. More on his 2012 campaign funding: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Simmons#2012_presidenti...

Only when you get to #5 do you see union money. But, the interesting thing about that money is

Most of the political work of the Service
    Employees International Union is funded
by about 300,000 janitors, nurses' aides,
    child-care providers and other members
who voluntarily contribute on average $7
per month to SEIU's Committee on Political
    Education (COPE).

So, the top 5 list for 2012 literally consists of 2 people on the Republican side and hundreds of thousands or millions of people on the Democratic side.

There's also no mention of Eric Schmidt, who has funded a company to help Clinton's campaign:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10359225

"The Groundwork, according to Democratic campaign operatives and technologists, is part of efforts by Schmidt — the executive chairman of Google parent-company Alphabet — to ensure that Clinton has the engineering talent needed to win the election."

Not all huge contributions to political campaigns are cash given directly to the candidate. Non-cash contributions, like Schmidt's, are much harder to track and regulate.

It could be used to create a competing system. ICANN would never allow this. If someone tried to put this together, I think they would quickly find their access to the data revoked.

The first screenshot is of PhpMyAdmin. That's embarrassing.

He's a liar. He will announce that a panel will look at the issue. Nothing will actually be done.

It's time to start calling them "collaborators".

Wow, thats perfect....

Atlas shrugged and dropped the world wide web.
