It is worth pointing out that we Northern Europeans can only afford this because we have a small group of highly competitive and wealth generating companies and sectors. We would be in a dire situation here in Denmark without Novo Nordisk. 1-2 years ago it was Maersk, DSV etc. that held up our economy because freight prices were high.

Denmark, Sweden, and Finland have economies that are nowhere near as concentrated as the two other Nordic nations. Norway is analogous to a Middle Eastern petrostate with over 60% of their economy being derived from oil. Iceland is also heavily reliant on aluminum mining and fishing with those two sectors making up over 70% of their economy.

Not true. Denmark has a very diverse economy.

It is also interesting that some of highest income people on Earth use the archive trick instead of paying to get through the paywall.

Who actually pays for legacy media anymore?

That's a fair point. It's still true that wealth is not built by permitting frivolous spending. With all the posts on HN I find interesting, I feel like It's the television chanal package effect. Even avid news readers would not have subscriptions to all the varied news sources here. About 90% of the time I pay for an honest Economist subcription. It's great, but pricey. Even if I wanted to, I could not afford simultaneous FT, Economist, NYT, Globe&Mail, etc. subscriptions.

It is also interesting that a news outlet based in one of the richest countries on Earth feels the need to put up a paywall on every single article.

Other options: a) Just have subscribers, and make do with whatever those proceeds are. b) Give subscribers access to some freemium articles. c) Give subscribers early-bird access to articles. Free access to others later (say, +1 day or so). d) Give non-subscribers 1..3 freebie articles, then paywall.

To name a few. But no: paywall everything, monetize to the last bit. Sign of the times, or indication of this news outlet's priorities / ethics?

It's a playground to try out various free open source LLMs. You seem to have picked the default one. Try mixtral-8x7b-instruct. It gave the following answer:

>The color of your house is likely caused by the paint or material used on the exterior. Blue paint or blue-colored siding, shingles, or other building materials would cause your house to appear blue.

>It's become apparent that the Israeli political/war/propaganda machine has an incredible amount of influence - far beyond anything I'd personally imagined could be possible. They've been able to effectively commandeer most of the West's "traditional" mass media

Why make up blatant lies like this when mainstream media has been very critical of Israel for the past few weeks? The only exception is Fox News.

"Blatant lies"? It's my opinion, based on what I see here in the UK, and what I see coming from the US. And what I see is not very critical of Israel's actions at all. Sometimes there's a "surface" of it, but invariably with language that both diminishes Israel's culpability and dehumanises Palestinians.

Hell, I still see Western media repeating the untruths of mass raprs, babies hung on clothes lines etc, even though they were debunked a long time ago, and even Israel now admits those events didn't happen and, furthermore, admits many civilians were killed by Israeli helicopter and tank fire on October 7th.

I will say I've noticed a small improvement in the past week or two, with publication of many more stories of the horrors of what Israel is doing in Gaza, and some improvement in language use.

I guess Hamas only went for a stroll through Israel and it didn't murder, torture or kidnap any one. Why are you lying?

Nice strawman you got there - as I'm sure you're aware, I didn't say anything of the sort. Hamas (or at least, Palestinian militants) definitely murdered and kidnapped civilians on Oct 7th - those atrocities are bad enough without having to make up stories of torture (released hostages say there were treated well), mass rape, burned civilians (we know know there were killed by tanks and helicopters), etc.

It puzzles my mind somebody would whitewash and deny horrible horrible crimes Hamas committed not only to Israelis but also to its own people.

And it boggles my mind that someone would still believe unrealistic atrocity propaganda that has been debunked even by Israel.

As I've said before, Hamas definitely murdered many civilians - that's a bad enough atrocity without the need to make up stories.

I feel we're squarely in non-HN territory now, so I bid you adieu.

Interesting that Discord has automatic systems for this. Is it LLM-based?

In fairness, the article doesn't say it was automated. If someone were writing that kind of stuff in a Discord channel, another user could very well report it to Discord.

"Discord’s Counter-Extremism analysts proactively detected, removed, and reported this user to the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center, which is what led to the user’s arrest." (from the liked article)

So I would hazard a guess at keyword matching algorithms. No need for a LLM. But automated most likey.

i recall a little while ago, voices raised about discord being used for things it wasnt made for. Community watch seems to be in play

>RV64GC

>C

What is the purpose of including the RISC-V Compressed 16-bit extension set in what is supposed to be a HPC chip? Most embedded/IoT RISC-V implementations include that for obvious reasons but why here?

If you don't have the C extension then you can't run off the shelf Linux distros such as Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Arch and are limited to what you compile yourself e.g. Buildroot / Yocto.

However the actual academic paper says it's RV64G, no C.

Thanks for the correction Bruce. I was in a rush (never post when you are in a rush, or drunk, or angry) and I was so used to seeing RV64GC that I didn't notice the absence of the 'C'.

The RVV here isn’t compatible with mainstream Linux anyway.

the same reasons motivating C still apply at HPC: higher code density means fewer bits wasted representing redundant information, better cache utilization, minimization of memory fetch bandwidth, etc.

basically, every metric derived from code size is happier when you have 20-30% fewer bits representing it.

The reason people think only 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed is that is lowball number the UN made up to not offend and anger Russia and China.

It is estimated that 25,000-75,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed just in Mariupol and surrounding areas.

>Even that, has x10 less the civilian rate death.

What a blatant lie. The Siege of Mariupol alone is estimated to have killed somewhere between 25000 and 75000 civilians. The UN's fraudulent claim that "only 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed" is a blatant lie to keep China and Russia happy.

Any discussion about collateral damage should take population density into consideration. The population density of Ukraine is 63 per square kilometer. The population density of Gaza is 5500 per square kilometer.

The internationally recognized State of Palestine is made up of two disjoint territories: Gaza and the West Bank. Israel gave peace a chance and left Gaza in 2005. The Palestinians immediately turned Gaza into a forward base and started attacking Israel. Israel only started the "blockade" (inspecting imports into Gaza) in 2007.

The UN is blatantly biased. There are ~50 Islamic states in the UN that compulsively always vote against Israel. These Islamic states have even made rambling and screaming about Israel a mandatory ceremony (Item 7) at UNHRC sessions.

Who set the criteria for occupying force, refugee population?
