How a "We Buy Ugly Houses" Franchise Left a Trail of Financial Wreckage in Texas (propublica.org)

They need to do a related story on all the spam calls about buying my house. It’s insane the number I get.

The calls have died down for me because I screen my calls. For me the problem is all of the scammy postal mail.

Not sure what that means. Can you explain? Anything that can slow down spam, I'm for.

Sometimes I answer and don't talk and after 10s they hang up. I was hoping the autodialing software would think "this is a dead line, let's remove it from the database" but I didn't notice a reduction after trying this.

The key is to only answer calls from people in your contacts. Everyone that really needs to get ahold of me will leave a voicemail or text me.

By answering your phone you’ve let the spammers know that your phone number is active.

I tried that for an extended period of time, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

The "answer and say nothing" didn't work, either.

> Are you interested in an offer on your house?

Yes, how much?

> How much are you looking for?

Wait what do you think the word “offer” means?

> Can you tell me about the house?

Are you trying to make an offer on a house you haven’t even looked up on Zillow?

> We need to know if it’s been renovated

Yeah I removed all the bathrooms and added 10 bedrooms

Definitely going to try this next time. :)
