Events like this make me think that internet connectivity is a bane, not a boon. This may be one of the unpopular opinions that one believes but is not willing to say out loud.

It may be time for me to stock up on multiple 1965 VW bugs to supply my transport needs until the apocalypse. Simple car, no electronics for a vendor to snoop with (hello Tesla) or tamper with (sorry you stooped to your customer's level of behavior, Garadget).

I too, liked Sleepers. You will need to stock up on extra paper gasket, cork gasket (valve covers), hoses, fan belts, fuel pump diaphrams, oil, and somehow gasoline, although wood, coal, propane powered bugs were made during ww2. Oh, and vw bugs did have electronics that failed, the regulator. On a 65 it uses a generator (6 volt) and has the reg under the back seat, buy a few.

Personally, I would opt for the '67 for virtue of the sealed beam headlamps, 12v electrical (still a generator), and extra power (1500cc vs 1300cc). And for end times utility, a swing side bus would win out.

But I digress. Any pre-obd2 car is easily flashed with a eeprom and burner, or replaced by an aftermarket ecu. No reason to be stuck with a 'black box' in your more modern car.
